Episode 03: Lebanon

Protests began against inflation, economic deterioration, wildfires, taxes on calling applications, and sectarian rule. Years of living under a sectarian government that divides power along religious lines, and is heavily influenced by the competition between Iran and Saudi Arabia have left citizens frustrated. When a decision was made by the now-deposed prime minister Hariri to have a tax on Whatsapp calls, protesters took to the streets. Recently an explosion of several tons of Ammonium Nitrate that was confiscated a few years prior led to protests demanding political accountability for the explosion. The explosion killed hundreds, injured thousands, and left over 30,000 homeless. The latest reports on protests led to the resignation of its newly formed cabinet.

Guest: Ali Reda, Masters in Anthropology Student, LGBT and Economic Justice activist with Extinction Rebellion movement.
