Episode 02: India

The Citizenship Amendment act has brought thousands to the streets to protest against the bill that would exclude Muslims by providing citizenship to non-muslim undocumented immigrants from neighboring countries. This could affect minorities and marginalized groups living in India, particularly Muslims. It also sets a dangerous pattern by a Hindu nationalist government that has been accused of discriminating against India’s Muslim government. During the protest, there was the police and paramilitary suppression on university campuses. Additionally, clashes between pro-ruling party supporters and protestors have been recorded, with supporters attacking journalists. For instance, Reporters without borders ranks India at 142 in the 2020 World Press Freedom index. Lastly, the disputed territory of Kashmir had a 213-day internet shutdown - the longest in a democracy - as journalists crossed the border to report.
